Klopp reveals how Liverpool tried to sign Mbappé on a plane
Jurgen Klopp has finally revealed the lengths Liverpool went to in their attempts to sign Kylian Mbappé.
The Reds interested in the French superstar goes back to 2016, when he was yet to sign professional terms with then club AS Monaco.
Mbappé went on to have a breakthrough season in 2016/17, scoring key goals to help Monaco knock Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund out of the UEFA Champions League on their way to the semi-finals. The club also won the Ligue 1 title that year.
Liverpool were keen on signing the teenage sensation, going as far as hiring a private airplane and picking up the player’s family to talk with Klopp about a potential move.

“The most expensive non-transfer we invested in,” Klopp told Magenta TV this week. “We flew from Blackpool to Nice. In Nice, the entire Mbappé family boarded a private jet with five rooms or something.
“We really went all out. Then we flew around in a circle, talked with the family, ate good food.
“We couldn’t be seen. We flew in a circle. It was fantastic. And then he went to Paris.”

Mbappé himself revealed in 2022 that he spoke with Liverpool because his mother was eager for him to join the Merseyside outfit.
“I talked to Liverpool because it’s the favourite club of my mum; my mum loves Liverpool. I don’t know why, you will have to ask her,” he said.
Liverpool, however, were unable to land the forward as they could not match the money on offer at Paris Saint-Germain. The club remained linked with the France international for many years, but he would go on to join Real Madrid in 2024.
