Okpebholo, Oshiomhole, others mourn Catholic Archbishop of Benin

By Ozioruva Aliu

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, former governor of the state and now a senator, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, have joined in mourning the Catholic Archbishop of Benin, Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze.

The cleric reportedly died while on vacation abroad, barely one month before his 70th birthday.

In a statement by Okpebholo’s Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Patrick Ebojele, the governor expressed sorrow over the death, describing his passing as a painful loss to the Christian community, Edo State and Nigeria.

The governor noted that Archbishop Akubeze distinguished himself as a humble shepherd and courageous advocate for justice, peace and good governance throughout his ministry.

“Archbishop Akubeze was a man of deep faith, wisdom and uncommon humility. He dedicated his life to serving God and uplifting humanity. He was a strong moral voice who consistently spoke for justice, peace, unity and the welfare of the poor.

“His passing is a great loss not only to the Catholic Church but also to Edo State and the nation. We have lost a respected spiritual father whose counsel and commitment to truth inspired many within and outside the Church,” the governor said.

He assured the Catholic community of the solidarity and support of the Edo State Government during this period of mourning and urged all Edo people, irrespective of their religious beliefs, to pray for the peaceful repose of the departed cleric.

On his part, Oshiomhole described the late cleric as a courageous witness to the Gospel, a compassionate shepherd and a humble servant of God whose simplicity, accessibility, gentleness and unwavering commitment to truth and justice earned him the admiration and respect of Catholics and non-Catholics alike.

In a condolence statement released by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Victor Oshioke, Oshiomhole said he received the news of the Archbishop’s death at the age of 69 with “profound shock and heartfelt sadness,” noting that Archbishop Akubeze lived a life that faithfully reflected his episcopal motto, Ut Testimonium Perhibeam Veritati—”That I may bear witness to the Truth.”

Reflecting on their interactions during his years as governor, Oshiomhole said he was always impressed by the Archbishop’s profound intellect, deep spirituality, rich pastoral experience, openness to differing opinions and unwavering confidence in God’s providence.

“His counsel was measured, his convictions were principled, and his life was a testament to selfless service,” the senator stated.
