Asagba Of Asaba Urges FRSC To Address Niger Bridge Gridlock

The Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Azinge, has called on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to find a lasting solution to the persistent gridlock at the Asaba-Onitsha interchange on the Niger Bridge, which disrupts traffic flow during the Christmas and New Year festivities.
The monarch made the appeal on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to his palace by the FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, as part of the Corps’ ongoing nationwide end-of-year special operations.
While congratulating Mohammed on his appointment as the 8th Corps Marshal, the monarch expressed concern over the recurring traffic congestion, which causes significant delays for motorists.
He also pledged to mobilize traditional rulers to support FRSC advocacy campaigns aimed at improving road safety and traffic management.
“We are grateful for the foresight that established the FRSC, which has worked tirelessly to minimize road accidents.
“The challenges at the Niger Bridge are evident, but we acknowledge and commend your efforts in addressing these issues. Traditional institutions like ours are closer to the people, and we will lead advocacy campaigns to enhance road safety initiatives,” said the Asagba.
The Asagba noted the need for partnerships between traditional institutions and FRSC, saying, “We will collaborate to ensure the safety and convenience of road users, not just in our domain but across Nigeria.”
In response, FRSC Corps Marshal Mohammed commended the Asagba for his support in traffic management. He highlighted the important role traditional rulers play in promoting road safety through their influence and moral authority.
“We appeal to you to educate your subjects on the dangers of reckless driving, overloading, and other unsafe practices that contribute to road accidents,” Mohammed said. “Your leadership can significantly boost our efforts to ensure safer roads during this festive period.”
Mohammed reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to reducing road traffic crashes and sought further collaboration with traditional rulers to achieve this goal.
The high chiefs of the palace however prayed for peace and unity in the country, and stressed the importance of collective efforts to safeguard the lives of road users during the holiday season.
