2027: Tinubu support group tackles Atiku over President’s vacation

KADUNA — The PBAT Door-to-Door Movement 2027 has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his comments on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ongoing vacation abroad.

The group described the President’s vacation as a routine break that should not be interpreted as an indication of a leadership vacuum in the country.

In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Comrade Sunday Adekanbi Asuku, FIMC, CMC, and made available to journalists in Kaduna on Sunday, the group urged Atiku to focus on presenting his political agenda to Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The movement also questioned what it described as Atiku’s changing position on fuel subsidy, recalling that he campaigned in the 2023 presidential election on a promise to remove the subsidy.

It said Nigerians deserved clear and consistent policy alternatives rather than political criticisms.

The statement read: “After contesting for the presidency repeatedly since 1993, Atiku should be telling Nigerians what he intends to do differently, rather than spending his time attacking President Tinubu.

“In 2023, he told Nigerians he would remove fuel subsidy. Today, he is talking about bringing it back. Nigerians deserve to know whether this is a genuine policy position or simply an attempt to respond to the current economic situation.”

The group said the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had commenced preparations for the 2027 elections and urged opposition politicians to take their programmes to the electorate.

It challenged Atiku to explain his plans for addressing the economy, insecurity, unemployment and other challenges confronting the country.

“INEC has rolled out the timetable. Atiku should go out and campaign and tell Nigerians what he has for them. Criticising President Tinubu because he has gone on vacation will not work.

“Presidents and world leaders go on vacation. A vacation does not mean a country has been abandoned. Nigeria has functioning institutions and officials responsible for ensuring that government continues to run,” the group said.

The movement urged Nigerians to assess the Tinubu administration based on its policies and performance, while calling on opposition parties and candidates to present alternative policy proposals ahead of the 2027 elections.
