APGA wins all positions in Anambra council poll

AWKA — The ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, in Anambra State has won all the 21 local government chairmanship positions and 362 councillorship seats in the local government election held on Saturday.

Chairman of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC, Mrs Genevieve Osakwe, announced the full results in Awka, declaring all APGA candidates winners in their respective positions.

Osakwe said the election was conducted peacefully and was free, fair, transparent and credible, in line with the state’s electoral laws and guidelines.

She also clarified reports that the Young Progressives Party, YPP, had boycotted the election in Anambra East Local Government Area following alleged violence and malpractice.

According to her, the commission was not aware of any boycott by the party or its candidates.

She said the YPP chairmanship candidate polled 1,658 votes, while the APGA candidate scored 50,169 votes to emerge winner in the local government area.

Osakwe commended the people of the state for their confidence in the commission during the election.

She also appreciated the security agencies and the media for their support before, during and after the exercise.

Speaking on behalf of the elected chairmen, the Chairman of Ayamelum Local Government Area, Emmanuel Igwebuike, commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo, ANSIEC and the security agencies for creating a conducive environment for the conduct of the election.
