There has been an outpouring of grief and tributes by the legends in the Nigerian entertainment industry following the passing of Tony Nkiruka, Chairman of Chezkay Productions.
Chezkay productions founded by Nkiruka was well known as a partner with Gabosky productions founded by Gab Onyi Okoye which were well known in the early beginnings of Nollywood.
The duo invested in and sponsored some of Nollywood earliest most expensive productions including Nneka the pretty Serpent (1&2), Battle of Musanga (1&2)and Beyond the vow. Their last film was banned in Nigeria.
Many agree that this partnership of Gabosky and Chezkay Productions unarguably contributed in giving Nollywood its solid foundation because they came into nollywood when no one saw its future.
Aside from movies, Nkiruka also supported musical artists as well as other worthy and philanthropic causes.
News of the passing of Chezkay broke last week, distorting activities in Nollywood. Chief Gabosky Okoye, his partner in movies, in reaction said, “to me, this is a very devastating loss”.
For Zeb Ejiro, Chief Nkiruka Chezkay “was so kindhearted. When people did not see any beauty in Nollywood, two great men Tony Nkiruka and Igwe Gabosky came in to sponsor movies. We all shall miss him”
Okechukwu Ogunjiofor, producer of Nneka the pretty serpent described Nkiruka as “very friendly and ever supportive and opened his house as our location aside investing much for the growth of Nollywood”.
For Kanayo O Kanayo, “Tony Nkiruka better known as Onwa Chezkay was “a good man, generosity personified and would not tolerate anyone being cheated in business.”
