Trump, Harris, Musk Shortlisted For Time Person Of The Year
U.S President-elect, Donald Trump, and current Vice President, Kamala Harris, have made the final shortlist for the person of the year award by Time Magazine.
The award is presented to a person, group, or concept that had the biggest impact for good or for ill on the world over the previous 12 months.
In the list revealed on Monday on NBC’s Today show, Trump was listed alongside nine other candidates for the prestigious award mainly for his feat at the U.S election, which saw his landslide victory over Harris.
Harris was also joined by billionaire tech mogul, Elon Musk. The Tesla CEO, having purchased the famous X platform, became Trump’s huge supporter at the elections and was eventually named co-lead in the Department of Government Efficiency, expected to propose cuts to the federal workforce and to regulations.
Also making the cut is Israeli President, Benjamin Netanyahu, whose ongoing battle with Iran-backed groups, Hamas and Hezbollah, makes him an important figure in world politics.
Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, also made the cut as his platforms, Facebook, Instagram and others, continue to grow and evolve. Forbes estimated that, as of December, Zuckerberg’s net worth reached $210bn, making him the fourth richest person in the world.
Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, Russian economist Yulia Navalnaya, Jerome Powell who has been chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve since 2018, Podcaster Joe Rogan and Mexico’s first-ever female President Claudia Sheinbaum, made the list.
In 2023, TIME selected pop superstar Taylor Swift as Person of the Year.
Other previous selections include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the “spirit of Ukraine” in 2022, Elon Musk in 2021, the Ebola fighters in 2014, and former U.S. President Barack Obama in 2012 and 2008.
