Benue LG Bans Scrap Iron Trade Amid Rising Insecurity
The Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State has imposed an immediate ban on scrap iron dealers, known locally as “iron condemn dealers,” across the entire local government area.
This decision, announced by the Executive Chairman, Hon. Ormin Torsar Victor, is aimed at addressing rising security challenges and restoring peace in the region.
Recently, more than 20 people, including a two-year-old child, were killed in a series of fresh attacks in Aondana and other communities in the council.
The chairman of the council had decried the persistent violence and the inaction of the federal government.
According to a statement signed by Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Timothy Ajieje, anyone found engaging in scrap iron trading, particularly those transporting materials from conflict-affected areas, will face arrest and prosecution.
The statement also urged residents to report suspicious activities to security agencies.
It called on security personnel and the community to support the enforcement of this ban, emphasising that the measure is designed to protect lives and property.
“This measure is aimed at protecting lives and property. We call on all security agencies and members of the community to support the strict enforcement of this ban,” it said.
