Police Debunk Maiduguri Bomb Explosion Report
The Borno State Police Command on Thursday debunked claims of multiple bomb explosions at the Giwa Barracks Armoury in Maiduguri, the state capital.
Police Public Relations Officer Nahum Daso described the incident as a “friendly fire” outbreak that was contained.
Speaking with THE WHISTLER, Daso said the incident, which started at 10:30 on Wednesday, was brought under control at 1:30 a.m. on Thursday.
He said, “Following reports received of explosions heard in Maiduguri. Preliminary investigations indicate that the detonation originated from a friendly fire incident at Giwa Barracks armoury.
“A combined security and fire-service response team arrived promptly on the scene and successfully extinguished the fire.”
He also noted that further preliminary investigations indicated that the “unusually high temperatures in Maiduguri” at this time of year may have contributed to the outbreak.
Daso said, “The fire incident caused some munitions to detonate, resulting in loud bangs.
“However, no enemy attack was recorded, and the security situation remains firmly under control.
“Security forces, EOD experts and the fire service were present at the scene to extinguish the resulting blaze.”
Daso assured residents that security operatives will continue working to ensure they sleep with both eyes closed.
