Troops repel Boko Haram/ISWAP attack in Borno, inflict heavy losses

By Ndahi Marama, Maiduguri

Troops of Joint Task Force, North East Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), have repelled an attempted invasion by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists, inflicting heavy casualties on the attackers during a failed assault in Borno State.

A security source confirmed on Friday that the incident occurred in the early hours of June 19, 2026, when terrorists launched coordinated attacks on military locations around Dutsen Kura and the Chara Road axis in Buratai, Biu Local Government Area.

The targeted area is a strategic corridor linking Biu, Buni Yadi, and Damaturu, a route frequently affected by insecurity.

According to the source, troops responded swiftly after detecting the incursion, engaging the attackers with superior firepower in a coordinated ground and air counter-offensive.

The Nigerian Air Force provided intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and precision air support, which worked in synergy with ground troops to disrupt the assault and force the terrorists into retreat.

“The prompt and effective employment of air and ground assets proved decisive. The terrorists suffered significant losses in personnel and equipment, while troops recorded no casualties,” the source said.

He added that the sustained offensive capability of OPHK troops continues to deny insurgents freedom of action across the theatre of operations.

The military urged residents to continue providing timely intelligence to security agencies, noting that ongoing operations are aimed at further degrading terrorist capabilities and restoring lasting peace in the region.

Operation Hadin Kai reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining pressure on insurgents and ensuring the safety of communities in the North East.
