Nigerian Exchange Records Slight Dip as Investors Lose N21 Billion

The Nigerian Exchange (NGX) began the trading week on Monday, April 14, 2025, on a negative note as the equities market contracted, with investors losing over N21 billion due to selling pressure.

Key market performance indicators showed a moderate decline of 0.03% ahead of anticipated inflation data.

The local bourse witnessed profit-taking across several market sectors, with the banking sector experiencing the most significant decline at 1.99%.

This market contraction resulted in a N21 billion reduction in investor wealth. The All-Share Index decreased by 33.72 basis points, representing a 0.03% drop to close at 104,529.62.

Trading activities showed mixed results, with total trade volume decreasing by 12.16%, while the total value traded increased by 3.98%. According to market analysts, approximately 379.95 million units valued at N10,106.11 million changed hands across 10,791 deals.

ACCESS CORPORATION led in trading volume, accounting for 13.08% of the total market transactions, followed by ZENITH BANK (12.95%), FIDELITY BANK (9.11%), UBA (7.76%), and GTCO (7.25%).

ZENITH BANK dominated in value terms, representing 26.30% of the total trade value. ABBEY BUILDING SOCIETY topped the gainers’ chart with a price increase of 9.95%, followed by UPDC (+9.82%), GUINEA INSURANCE (+9.52%), VFD GROUP (+9.46%), SOVEREIGN TRUST INSURANCE (+9.41%), and UAC OF NIGERIA (+8.93%), along with 22 other advancing stocks.

Twenty-four stocks depreciated, with INTERNATIONAL ENERGY INSURANCE leading the decliners at -9.76%. Other significant losers included CONSOLIDATED HALLMARK HOLDINGS (-8.33%), JAPAUL GOLD (-7.46%), NEIMETH PHARMACEUTICAL (-6.94%), FTN COCOA (-5.26%), and VERITAS KAPITAL (-4.72%).

The session ended with positive market breadth, recording 28 gainers against 24 losers. Sector performance was predominantly negative, with three of the five major sectors declining: banking (-1.99%), insurance (-0.36%), and oil & gas (-0.19%). The consumer goods sector grew marginally by 0.08%, while the industrial sector remained unchanged.

By the close of trading, the NGX equities market capitalisation had decreased by N21.19 billion (0.03%) to settle at N65.69 trillion.
