Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASSAN) Abia State branch has issued a 7-day ultimatum to the state government, demanding financial autonomy, consolidated legislative salary structure (CONLESS), and administrative autonomy.

The chairman and secretary of the association, Kalu Sunday and Ucheka Ugochukwu, are requesting the Abia State House of Assembly to implement the policies they have demanded.

A deadline, set for February 10, was imposed following a meeting of the PASSAN Executive Council on January 28..

The state government failed to act on the association’s demands despite a prior deadline set on November 19, the association said.

PASSAN has threatened to stop providing services if the state government does not meet their demands.

The letter of notice regarding the strike reads, “Fraternal greetings from the leadership of the parliamentary staff Association of Nigeria (PASSAN) Abia State chapter.

“We refer to our letter dated 19th November, 2024 on the 14 days Ultimatum to embark on industrial action if Financial Autonomy, Consolidated Legislature Salary Structure (CONLESS) and Administration Autonomy is not implemented in the state House of Assembly as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and law No. 8 of 2019 of the Abia State House of Assembly.

“The state Executive Council of the union met on the 28th January, 2025 and reviewed our engagement with Government officials and observed that no single action was taken to avert the industrial crisis.

“The parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, Abia State Executive Council therefore issued a 7-days Ultimatum from 31 January to 10th February.

“We therefore hope that this avail opportunity to meet the demands of the Union or the Union will have no other option than to withdraw her services”.
