Benue PDP resolves to rebuild party, vows to reclaim state in 2027

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue North East Senatorial District (Zone A) said it has renewed resolve to rebuild the party and prepare for a strong comeback in the 2027 general elections.

This comes after a caucus meeting held in Lessel, Ushongo Local Government Area, at the residence of the late Chief Aker Gajir.

The meeting led by the party’s State Vice Chairman for Zone A, Hon. Abraham Waroh, brought together party executives, stakeholders, grassroots leaders, and representatives from all seven local governments in the zone.

In a communiqué signed by three representatives from each local government after the sitting, the caucus expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation across Benue, particularly the continued attacks by armed herders.

The meeting described the violence as a grave threat to the existence of Benue communities and urged Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration to act swiftly to restore peace and protect ancestral lands.

The PDP extended its condolences to victims of the attacks, many of whom have been displaced or lost loved ones.

It reiterated firm support for the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law of 2017, enacted during the tenure of former Governor Samuel Ortom, describing it as the most effective policy to tackle the crisis. The caucus called on the state government to fully implement the law without compromise.

The fate of internally displaced persons (IDPs) was another key issue raised.

The PDP criticized Governor Alia for not fulfilling his promise to return IDPs to their homes, noting that the number of displaced persons has significantly increased two years into his administration.

The meeting also demanded full autonomy for local governments, urging the governor to comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling that allows chairmen access to funds from the federation account.

It faulted the current administration for withholding local government finances, which, according to the caucus, has crippled basic service delivery—pointing out that no local government in the state has executed even minor infrastructure projects like boreholes or toilets since the removal of fuel subsidies in May 2023.

The PDP further urged the state government to pay outstanding salaries, pensions, and gratuities, lamenting that Benue remains the only state still owing such arrears despite increased revenues since subsidy removal.

As part of its rebuilding strategy, the caucus resolved to replicate this expanded caucus structure at the local government and ward levels.

A comprehensive list of grassroots caucuses will be compiled and submitted to the zonal leadership to strengthen participation and unity within the party.

Rejecting any involvement in political coalitions, the PDP Zone A Caucus warned members against engaging with groups or individuals who could jeopardize the party’s cohesion.

They called for vigilance against efforts to destabilize the state, particularly from political opportunists, terrorists, and land grabbers.

The caucus concluded by passing a vote of confidence in Chief Samuel Ortom, recognized as the leader of the party in the state. It also reaffirmed support for the State Chairman, Rt. Hon. Ezekiel Adaji, and the State Working Committee, pledging to work collectively towards reclaiming power in 2027 and repositioning Benue for growth, peace, and development.
