Jack Grealish has been handed an unexpected chance to revive his Manchester City career.
New head coach Enzo Maresca wants to assess the winger during pre-season before deciding his future, TEAMtalk reports, softening what had looked like a certain exit.
The shift marks a notable change of fortune. Grealish had appeared destined to leave permanently this summer, having fallen out of favour under Pep Guardiola.
A permanent transfer or another loan seemed the likeliest outcome only weeks ago.
Grealish handed City lifeline as Maresca plans assessment
Maresca’s arrival has reopened the door. The Italian is a long-standing admirer of the England international, having worked closely with him as Guardiola’s assistant.
That period, in 2022-23, coincided with the finest football of Grealish’s City career.
His loan at Everton also strengthened his case. Grealish rediscovered his form at Goodison Park, registering two goals and six assists in 18 league starts.
A broken foot in January, however, curtailed an otherwise encouraging campaign. Rather than sanctioning an immediate sale, City are prepared to take a closer look.
Maresca has informed the club he wants to see the 30-year-old in training and give him a chance to fight for his place. The player is expected to report back for pre-season.
Everton have not gone away, though. The Toffees remain keen on a reunion, potentially on a second loan, having enjoyed the impact of his brief spell. David Moyes is understood to be a firm admirer.
City are not ruling out a departure entirely, either. With Grealish entering the final year of his contract, a sale later in the window remains possible should a suitable offer arrive.
Signed from Aston Villa for a British-record £100m in 2021, Grealish now faces a pivotal pre-season.
His performances under Maresca will likely determine whether he stays to fight for his place or seeks regular football elsewhere.
