Chelsea have reportedly hit a stumbling block in their pursuit to re-sign former player Marc Guehi during the January transfer window.
The Blues are eager to bolster their squad under manager Enzo Maresca this month.
According to The Mirror, Chelsea’s strict wage structure could be a key reason why they have been unable to bring the 24-year-old defender back to Stamford Bridge.
The club’s current contract policy offers players a lower basic salary but ties them to long-term deals. However, Guehi is expected to cost more than £50 million, with Crystal Palace having quoted a £70 million asking price for him during the summer transfer window.
Additionally, the English defender is reportedly seeking wages of around £200,000 per week, which could pose a challenge for Chelsea’s wage policy.
This situation suggests that Maresca’s side might miss out on the highly sought-after defender, who has been in demand over the past few months.
Guehi, who joined Chelsea’s academy at the age of seven, is also reportedly a target for Liverpool this month.
The former Swansea City loanee has entered the final 18 months of his contract with Crystal Palace.
Since joining Palace from Chelsea in 2021 for a reported £18 million, Guehi has become a key player for the Eagles, making over 100 appearances for the club.
