Lewandowski reveals why he’ll not play for Poland
Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski has opened up about his decision to distance himself from the Polish national team for as long as Michał Probierz remains the manager.
The Barcelona star had previously declared his intention not to play for Poland under the current coach.
It is understood that the decision followed the manager’s removal of Lewandowski as team captain.
The 36-year-old expressed dismay at how the decision was conveyed, describing it as disrespectful.
Speaking with WP Sportowe Fakty, Lewandowski explained how he received an unexpected call from the manager, informing him that the captaincy he had held for eleven years had been taken from him without explanation.
“I wasn’t expecting it at all; I was putting my children to bed,” he said.
The legendary striker recounted that, while he had yet to tell his family what had happened, “a message appeared on the PZPN website. The way it was communicated to me is really surprising to me.”
Lewandowski, who has captained the Polish national team for eleven years and represented the country for seventeen, added, “It seemed to me that such matters should be handled differently. It really shouldn’t be like this. The coach betrayed my trust. I’m very hurt by what happened.”
