Club World Cup: Ex-EPL referee Hackett warns Chelsea’s Colwill may face sanctions

Keith Hackett, a former Premier League referee, has warned that Chelsea star Levi Colwill could be sanctioned by FIFA because of his antics during the Blues’ recent 4-1 victory against Benfica in the FIFA Club World Cup Round of 16 encounter.

Chelsea took the lead against Benfica, thanks to Reece James’ free-kick.

Benfica were later awarded a late penalty by VAR which winger Angel di Maria converted to restore parity.

But Colwill was not happy with the decision of referee Slavko Vincic and the 22-year-old was seen giving the match official an earful.

It was widely reported that the English defender, who was given a yellow card, for his behaviour, called the referee a ‘disgrace’.

In the extra time, goals from Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall ensured Chelsea defeated the Portuguese side 4-1.

Speaking to Football Insider, Hackett said: “You may disagree with a referee, but you can’t use those words. I believe all referees at the Club World Cup speak English, so they will understand what is been said.

“There is a threshold that referees have, and that is a variable, but I suspect if FIFA pick up on this incident, which they are likely to through the media, that player [Colwill] can expect a sanction.”
