Tinubu Orders MDAs to Enforce Mandatory Health Insurance Under NHIA 2022

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that the country has electricity to power the economy for growth amid continued darkness across the country, News.ng reports.

The President stated this on Friday at a banquet held in his honour in the oil-rich Bayelsa State.

While addressing guests at the occasion, the President noted that he made a mistake by attempting to establish independent power generation, which has yielded no results in the country.

According to data, Nigeria generates between 4,000 MW and 5,800 MW of electricity but utilises only 32% due to weak power grid infrastructure. The highest ever recorded was 5,801.84 MW on March 4, 2025, enough to power more than 40 million homes.

Comparing Nigeria with other economies in Africa, South Africa generates over 58,000 MW through coal, but due to a lack of maintenance, the country has below 27,000 MW available to the grid. The country produces about 25% of Africa’s total electricity.

Meanwhile, the President admitted that his administration is still struggling to ramp up generation capacity but assured Nigerians of increased capacity, failing to give details on how to achieve his ambitious power generation goals.

He said, “I won’t go back to history of my first attempt to bring an independent power generation system to Nigeria. There we are today. I’m struggling with it, but I assure Nigerians that we have electricity to power our growth.”

On how to accelerate growth and development, he called for synergy between the federal government and the state governments, as his administration is willing to engage sub-national governments.

“Development advances further, faster, when the federal government and the state government work in partnership and towards a shared purpose. I hear you,” he said.

On road infrastructural deficit, the President hinted at supporting states to undertake the rehabilitation of federal roads.

“I hear you, dearly, federal road. Okay, I will take you with me when I’m going. You bill it for your people.

“When we met in my office, you were asking for this exception of that and waiver of that and everything. You mentioned bias and your commitment. Now you want reimbursement. It’s now federal road. I’ll take it with me,” he said.

There can be no industrialization, skill development, and empowerment without power. I assure Nigerians that we will have electricity to power our growth.
