A disturbing video released on Friday by a suspected jihadist group active in the Lake Chad area—JAS—which is going viral on the microblogging platform X, has sparked concerns over the survival of the 416 civilians abducted after the insurgents attacked a military base and an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Gwoza, Borno State, on March 4, 2026, news.ng reports.
Monitored by this news platform, the video shows the captives, mostly women and children, made to sit on the floor.
According to the transcript in the video, the insurgents claimed the captives are being well taken care of following a request for proof of life by the Borno South Youth Alliance (BOSYA), a community group advocating for the release of the individuals from the community.
The group has called on the federal government to make moves to secure their release.
One of the abducted women, while begging for their release, said they want to reunite with their families, calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and the State Governor Babagana Zulum to come to their aid.
Neither the federal government nor the Borno State government has responded to the new development as of the time of this report.
