Former Niger Delta Affairs Minister, Usani Usani, has explained that he left the national ruling party, All Progressives Congress, APC, because it did not keep to its principles and promises to the people.
He said that, as a man of strict principles, he could not have continued with the party.
He spoke in Calabar, where he was introduced as the National Vice Chairman of the coalition party, the African Democratic Congress, ADC, for the South-South, after addressing a coalition of politicians from different parties.
He said his conscience did not allow him to persist in APC any further because, according to him, the party had consistently deviated from its ideals and had failed to implement its promises to the people.
He told supporters that he left APC due to the “constriction of democratic space in the state which frustrated his governorship aspiration”.
Usani left his position as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs on 29 May 2019 and remained inactive in party politics until he formally joined the PRP in May 2022 to pursue his gubernatorial ambition.
Usani, who never agreed with former Governor Imoke and had even contested against him, said he had to reconcile his differences with the leader of ADC in the state because he had since exhausted all grievances through the relevant channels.
“The grievances were never personal but purely political. And for me, once I exhaust all official channels of expressing political differences, I forget about any hurts.
“So when His Excellency, the former governor, our leader, called me on phone about the ADC, we spoke because I have lots of respect for him,” Usani said.
