UN Chief Guterres Warns of ‘Dangerously Volatile’ Iran-Israel Tensions

The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has issued a stark warning regarding the escalating hostilities between Iran and Israel, describing the situation as dangerously volatile.

Speaking to the UN Security Council on Friday, Guterres emphasised the critical nature of the current moment for international stability. “We are not drifting toward crisis; we are racing toward it,” he said, adding, “This is a moment that could shape the fate of nations.” He further cautioned that “the expansion of this conflict could ignite a fire no one can control,” highlighting concerns about potential widespread devastation.

The conflict has expanded beyond bilateral tensions, with Houthi forces from Yemen launching missile attacks toward Israeli territory and Palestinian areas, while Iraqi militant groups are reportedly preparing for potential involvement.

Reports indicate that extensive military operations have affected over 100 locations throughout Iran, targeting both military installations and nuclear infrastructure, including facilities at Natanz, Isfahan, and the Khondab heavy water reactor.

Iranian authorities have reported over 224 civilian fatalities, though some assessments suggest the number could be significantly higher, with more than 2,500 people reportedly wounded. Major urban centres such as Tehran are experiencing population displacement, fuel supply disruptions, and heightened public alarm.

Israel has faced retaliatory strikes hitting multiple cities, including Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Beersheba. The attacks have damaged essential civilian infrastructure, including the Soroka Medical Centre and the Weizmann Institute of Science, resulting in at least 24 Israeli deaths and more than 900 injuries.

The Secretary-General called for both nations to pursue diplomatic solutions and emphasised Iran’s obligation to maintain full cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
