Tinubu Tasks New IPI Leadership With Promoting Democracy, Information Access

President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Mr. Musikilu Mojeed, Editor-in-Chief of Premium Times, and other newly elected leaders of the Nigeria chapter of the International Press Institute (IPI).

Mojeed was re-elected as President of IPI Nigeria, alongside Ahmed Shekarau of Media Trust as Secretary and Fidelis Mbah of Al Jazeera Television as Deputy President.

Other elected executives include Rafatu Salami of Voice of Nigeria (Treasurer), Yomi Adeboye of Herald Newspaper (Assistant Secretary), and Tobi Soniyi of Arise News (Legal Adviser).

Tinubu called on the new IPI leadership to collaborate with the government to expand access to information and strengthen the country’s democratic values.

He noted that IPI plays a key role in promoting responsible journalism that aligns with national interest and the principles enshrined in Nigeria’s constitution.

Earlier, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, commended both the IPI Nigeria and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) for conducting smooth and peaceful elections to usher in new leadership.

Idris hailed Mojeed, Shekarau and Mbah for their re-election along with other executives, describing their election as a demonstration of unity and professionalism within the Nigerian media space.

Idris further acknowledged the leadership transition within the NUJ, which saw Malam Alhassan Yahaya emerge as President and Abimbola Oyetunde as the first female Deputy National President.

He noted that the NUJ’s evolving leadership structure reflects greater inclusivity and progressive dynamics within the union.

The minister called on both the IPI and NUJ to continue promoting ethical and responsible journalism.

“As defenders of truth, the media must prioritize integrity and accountability in their work. I encourage both unions to ensure that their members uphold the highest standards of journalism for the betterment of our democracy.

“We will continue to protect the fundamental rights of the press, ensuring a conducive environment for free, fair, and responsible journalism to thrive in Nigeria,” said Idris.
