Tinubu Hails Pope Leo XIV’s Moral Leadership, Commits Nigeria to Global Peace Efforts

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised the newly inaugurated head of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, as a beacon of humility and moral leadership, following the historic beginning of his papacy at the Vatican today.

President Tinubu, who attended the event upon the personal invitation of the Holy Father, joined other world leaders and millions of Catholics across the globe in witnessing what he described as a “momentous spiritual and diplomatic milestone.”

In a statement released after the papal inauguration, the Nigerian president lauded the Pope’s long-standing relationship with Nigeria and his steadfast message of peace.

“Pope Leo XIV’s humility, history with Nigeria, and message of peace remind us of the moral leadership the world desperately needs,” Tinubu remarked.

He further emphasised Nigeria’s enduring commitment to fostering global harmony through interfaith and intercultural cooperation.

“As a nation of deep faith and great diversity, Nigeria remains committed to building bridges across belief, race, and continent — for peace, for progress, and for all of humanity,” he declared.

President Tinubu concluded his message with a prayer for divine guidance for the Pope and for all those working towards a more equitable and compassionate world.

“May the Almighty guide the Holy Father and strengthen all who labour for a more just and compassionate world,” he said.

The election of Pope Leo XIV marks a new era for the Catholic Church, with many observers noting his prior advocacy for reconciliation in Africa, including initiatives that fostered dialogue among Nigeria’s diverse religious communities.

Tinubu’s presence at the Vatican underscores Nigeria’s prominent role on the global stage as a nation striving for peace amid complexity and highlights the country’s aspiration to be a model for interfaith unity and diplomatic engagement.

News.ng reports that Pope Leo XIV was inaugurated on Sunday, May 18, following his election on May 8, 2025, after the death of Pope Francis on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025.
