El Anatsui @ 80: Nsukka honours global art legend with landmark book

By Prisca Sam-Duru

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), in collaboration with the University Senior Staff Club, has concluded arrangements to host the academic community, the media, cultural institutions, art enthusiasts, alumni, traditional rulers, public office holders, and the general public, for the celebration of a global visual art Legend, Professor El Anatsui with a landmark book.

The formal unveiling of the historic book titled, “El Anatsui: The Man, the Myth, the Legend at 80 and Counting,” will take place on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at the Princess Alexandra Auditorium (PAA), UNN.

The monumental 411-page compendium, edited by Associate Prof. Greg Mbajiorgu and Chikaogwu Kanu, celebrates the extraordinary life, scholarship, and artistic genius of Emeritus Professor El Anatsui. The Ghanaian-born artist lived and worked in Nsukka for forty-seven years, rising from this modest university town to become arguably the most influential Black visual artist of the contemporary era.

More than a book launch, this event celebrates a global phenomenon. Born in Anyako, Volta Region, Ghana, on February 4, 1944, the youngest of his father’s 32 children, Anatsui lost his mother and was raised by his uncle.
He trained at the College of Art, University of Science and Technology, in Kumasi, central Ghana and also has a post-graduate diploma in art education from the same school, in 1969.

From his base in Nsukka, El Anatsui transformed discarded materials into masterpieces that now adorn the world’s most prestigious museums and galleries. His innovations have earned him international acclaim, including recognition as one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World. Few individuals have done more to project Nsukka onto the global cultural map; through his work, the town has become a destination for scholars, curators, and tourists alike. His story demonstrates how creativity can transform geography into destiny, turning a university town into a global cultural landmark.

The event will feature a comprehensive review of the book by Professor Chris Uchenna Agbedo—a renowned linguist, literary scholar, and public affairs analyst—whose insights will highlight the volume’s significance as a cultural archive and intellectual monument.

The unveiling ceremony will bring together an impressive assembly of leaders from academia, government, and the arts. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Professor Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, will serve as Chief Host, alongside the President of the University Senior Staff Club, Professor Chukwudi Nnamchi, and the Chairman of the Planning Committee, Professor Lazarus Ogenyi. Presiding as Chairman of the Occasion is the revered traditional ruler, His Majesty Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, CFR, the Obi of Onitsha, whose commitment to culture and scholarship continues to inspire generations.

Other distinguished Special Guests of Honour include: Rt. Hon. Chidi Obeta (Member, House of Representatives); Justice Professor Peter Umeadi; Dr. Obi Asika (Director-General, National Council for Arts and Culture); Dr. (Mrs.) Virgy Anohu (Adadioramma); HRH Igwe George Asadu (Okpudo, Ihe n’Owerre); HRH Eze Ifeanyi Ekeh (Udumeze III of Lokpanta); and Chief Loretta Aniagolu (Director, FIT Consult Group).

The volume is unprecedented in scope. Featuring contributions from over one hundred scholars, artists, and cultural practitioners from Africa, Europe, and North America, it stands as one of the most comprehensive tributes ever dedicated to an African artist. The collection captures not only El Anatsui’s artistic achievements but also his legacy as a mentor, teacher, philanthropist, and institution-builder.

According to the organisers, the significance of this publication extends beyond individual celebration. It documents the intellectual history of the University of Nigeria, chronicles the emergence of the “Nsukka School of Art,” and serves as a testament to Africa’s growing contribution to global artistic discourse.
