Tinubu Backs APC Governors On Primaries
Niger State Governor Umar Bago has disclosed that governors elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will proceed with party primaries in accordance with the Electoral Act, news.ng reports.
The governor made this known to State House journalists shortly after meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to the governor, the President gave the directive to APC governors to conduct the primaries.
He said, “We came to thank the president for his magnanimity and his support to the governors and for our party, the APC. He gave us a marching order to what to do.
“For him also to have given and ceded his executive power to the governors to go ahead and conduct primaries based on the electoral act, either a consensus or direct primaries. So he’s reiterated his support for our decision, and he has given us a go-ahead to go ahead.”
The governor also revealed that they discussed how to ensure that the exercise is conducted peacefully.
“We met with Mr President, the timetable for the primaries has been released, we’ve discussed the process moving forward so that there will be fair and fair elections, no rancour, and at the end of the process, the party should be won, stronger than ever, heading towards the election,” Bago concluded.
Following the disclosure by the governors, it is now left for them to adopt their preferred mode of primaries (direct or indirect) in their respective states in the coming days.
