World number two Iga Swiatek produced a stunning comeback victory over Ekaterina Alexandrova to win the Korea Open on Sunday.
She recovered from a 3-1 deficit to win 1-6 7-6 (7-3) 7-5, earning her third trophy of the season after winning the Wimbledon and the Cincinnati Open, all of which have come in the past three months.
Alexandrova won the first set 6-1 as Swiatek struggled to get going in the before finding her feet to win the second and third sets 7-6 (7-3) 7-5.
It was Swiatek’s 57th match win of the year – the most of anyone on the WTA Tour.
The Polish star was delighted to win while admitting that Alexandrova gave her a tough time in the encounter.
Swiatek said: “I’m happy that I could win here because of the family history.
“My dad couldn’t win the Olympics, but at least I won this tournament, so hopefully he’s going to come here next year to enjoy everything.
“Honestly, I don’t know how I won it, because you were just playing great. I just tried to stay alive.
“Hopefully, we’re going to play more finals. It’s always tough against you, so it’s also entertaining.
Swiatek has won 25 WTA Tour–level singles titles, including six major titles: four at the French Open, one at Wimbledon, and one at the US Open. She has also won the 2023 WTA Finals and eleven WTA 1000 titles. She is the first Pole to win a major singles title.
