Street name change: Lagos council defies public outcry, renames six roads
Amid the growing debate over the renaming of roads and landmarks in Lagos State, the Eti-Osa Local Government Area has announced the renaming of six streets as part of its ongoing street-naming and revalidation initiative.
The announcement comes shortly after a similar move in Bariga Local Council Development Area sparked public backlash, following the decision of the former council chairman, Kolade Alabi, to rename several locations, including the popular “Charly Boy Bus Stop,” which was controversially changed to “Olamide Baddo Bus Stop” along the Oworonshoki Expressway.
The development drew condemnation from prominent figures, including human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, who described the action as unconstitutional.
In a public notice issued on Friday and signed by the Council Manager, Mrs Oluwakemi Oshun, the Eti-Osa council said the new street names take immediate effect.
Residents, businesses, and the general public were advised to update their records to reflect the changes.
According to the council, the exercise is aimed at promoting the cultural and historical relevance of local street names while improving navigation, urban planning, and identity management.
The list of renamed streets as released by the council is as follows:
Tony Amadasun Road in Igbo Efon is now Chief Femi Pedro Road
Dr Udo Wogu Drive in Chevy View is now Chief Adebola Dosunmu Drive
Augusta Orji Street along Aro Ologolo Road is now Alhaji Adio Mayegun Street
Chike Mba Close in Osapa London is now Hon. Sikiru Ashorota Close
Ugochukwu Orji Street in Igbo Efon is now Barr Wale Sanni Street
Fubara Dublin Green Street in Igbo Efon is now Rafiu Olukolu Street
