Sokoto Urges Caution On Forest Guards Deployment
The Sokoto State Government has reiterated its readiness to engage in dialogue with armed groups willing to renounce violence and reintegrate into society as part of its strategic call for lasting peace and sustainable security in the state, expressing caution over the unregulated deployment of forest guards across the North-West region.
The Special Adviser on Security to Governor Ahmed Aliyu Rtd Col. Ahmed Usman stated this on Wednesday while speaking to newsmen emphasizing the importance of negotiation over prolonged conflict.
He said that the State is open to negotiating with those who demonstrate a sincere desire to surrender and embrace peace.
“Many historical conflicts have not ended solely through the use of force, but through meaningful dialogue,” the statement noted“
On the federal government’s plan to deploy Forest Guards to help tackle insecurity, he said the initiative is a welcomed one, but called for a well-coordinated and community-sensitive approach, stressing that recruitment must be based on integrity, transparency, and rooted in local trust.
“All Forest Guards must operate strictly under the supervision of conventional security agencies to ensure accountability and prevent any potential excesses”
He called for effective communication between Forest Guards and the communities they serve, noting that trust-building is vital to the success of any security intervention.
Reaffirming its full support for all peace-focused initiatives, the state government assured citizens that it remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting lives and property.
“No expense will be spared in securing Sokoto State and ensuring peace returns to all troubled areas,” he stated.
According to him the policy stance reflects the Ahmed Aliyu-led administration’s broader strategy of balancing kinetic security measures with community engagement and dialogue, aiming to restore normalcy and build long-term peace across the state.
He expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the service chiefs, and security personnel for their continued efforts in safeguarding the region.
