Sinner Stays World Number One Despite French Open Final Defeat

Jannik Sinner retained his place at the top of the ATP world rankings despite his defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open final on Sunday.

The rankings were announced on Monday, Carlos Alcaraz also maintained his spot behind Sinner in second.

Sinner gained 500 points for reaching the final at Roland Garros. Alcaraz, who defended the title for the second consecutive year, earned no points to keep his place.

Alexander Zverev remained third despite losing in the quarter-finals to Novak Djokovic.

Jack Draper has climbed to a career-high No 4 after reaching the fourth round.

Tennis legend Novak Djokovic occupies the fifth position after crashing out in the last four against Sinner.

Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti, who was forced to retire against Alcaraz in the semi-final, continued his impressive rise to move up to sixth for the first time in his career.

Taylor Fritz dropped three places to seven with fellow American Tommy Paul climbing to eighth, his best ranking ever.

Casper Ruud started the tournament at No 8, but his second-round defeat resulted in a slump to No 16 while Stefanos Tsitsipas has now officially left the top 20 as he is down six to No 26.

A player must earn ranking points in at least three tournaments or earn a minimum of 10 singles ranking points in one tournament to appear on the WTA Rankings.
