Reps Knock WAEC Over Shoddy Conduct Of Exams
The House of Representatives had slammed the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for the shoddy handling of the 2025 edition of senior secondary school certificate examinations.
The examinations were marred by irregularities, mainly leakage of exam questions, leading to the erosion of public trust in the examination body.
The House, through its committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies, flayed the management of WEAC for compromising the integrity of the system.
At an investigative hearing on Monday, the lawmakers took the head of WAEC in Nigeria, Dr Amos Dangut, to task over the lapses.
The chairman of the committee, Rep. Oforji Oboku, declared WAEC’s conduct concerning and unacceptable to the Nigerian people.
“This gathering reflects our collective resolve to restore dignity and credibility to our examination system.
“On behalf of this committee, I offer an unreserved apology to Nigerian parents, guardians, and candidates who suffered the chaos of the last examination cycle. We are committed to ensuring this never happens again,” Oboku said.
The committee chairman described as disturbing the reports about students in some exam centres who were forced to write their papers late into the night with torch lights.
“It is unacceptable that in 2025, students are sitting for exams at 11 pm under torchlights. This is not just a failure of logistics; it is a failure of leadership.
“We must identify the underlying causes of these repeated failures, address them decisively, and hold those responsible to account,” Oboku declared.
Other members of the committee took their turns to lambast WAEC for what they described as the exam body’s consistent failure to get it right.
Responding to the criticisms, Dr Dangut cited unforeseen logistical challenges and insecurity in some parts of the country for the lapses.
But the lawmakers were not impressed as they dismissed his explanations as lame excuses.
The committee then mandated WAEC to submit a comprehensive audit of its digital infrastructure, particularly in underserved areas, and a detailed roadmap on its CBT readiness for scrutiny.
