Rainstorms Displace 3,000 In Twelve Kebbi Communities

A joint assessment team from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Kebbi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed that recent rainstorms displaced more than 3,000 residents and wreaked havoc on infrastructure and homes across parts of Kebbi State.

This was made known on Wednesday via NEMA’s official X (formerly Twitter) page, following an on-the-spot evaluation conducted across 12 communities in Suru and Shanga Local Government Areas.

The agency noted that the storms happened on April 9, 14, and 16.

The Head of NEMA Sokoto Operations Office, Mr Aliyu Shehu Kafindangi, who led the team, visited scenes of destruction where rooftops were torn off, fences and walls collapsed, and several residential buildings were destroyed under the force of the wind and rain.

“The rainstorms, which occurred on April 9th, 14th, and 16th, caused widespread destruction—tearing off rooftops, toppling walls and fences, and collapsing residential buildings. Household items, including food supplies, beverages, furniture, and clothing, were significantly damaged.

“More than 3,000 people were affected, with many displaced and currently staying with friends and relatives.

“During the visit, it was observed that some affected residents had begun partial repairs on their homes to cope with the situation,” the post read.

The agency also noted that community members joined the assessment effort and offered firsthand accounts of the storm’s impact and the ongoing struggles to rebuild the communities.

NEMA emphasised that a detailed report of the assessment would inform the next phase of relief intervention and planning.

The agency also assured that it is working with relevant stakeholders to ensure appropriate support reaches the victims.
