The police have arrested six suspected herdsmen in connection with a deadly ambush of police tactical teams at Agu Centre, Katsina-Ala/Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State.
The attack, which happened on Friday, claimed the lives of three police officers, while seven others remain missing.
The Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, CP Innocent Ifeanyi Emenari, is leading the ongoing response operation to rescue the missing officers and track down the fleeing attackers.
Confirming the development in a statement on Sunday, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said six suspects have so far been taken into custody and are providing useful information.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, condemned the attack as “cruel, unwarranted, and an affront on the good people of Benue State.”
He assured that the Police will intensify operations until the perpetrators are brought to justice.
“No stone will be left unturned in restoring peace and security in Benue State. Additional tactical assets have been deployed to the affected area,” the IGP stated.
While urging members of the public to remain calm, vigilant, and supportive of security agencies, he stressed the force’s commitment to rescuing the missing personnel, arrest the fleeing suspects, and dismantle criminal networks behind the attack.
“The Nigeria Police Force will not relent until these criminals are rooted out and the safety of our communities restored,” Egbetokun assured.
