The Deputy Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Hon. Abayomi Akinruntan, has resigned his position, citing the need to respect the state’s informal political zoning arrangement.
His resignation was followed by that of the Majority Leader, Hon. Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, who stepped down without stating a reason.
In a letter read by the Clerk of the House, Benjamin Jayeiola, during plenary on Monday, Akinruntan explained that his decision was driven by the need to maintain regional balance in the distribution of political offices.
“I hereby tender my resignation from the office of the Deputy Speaker effective from today, 2nd June, 2025,” the letter read.
“Recall that the House was inaugurated in June 2023, and I was unanimously elected as Deputy Speaker as stipulated in our standing order.
“My resignation is borne out of the need to align with the conventional arrangement in power-sharing of elective positions in the state.
“I want to appreciate all members and staff for their contributions and support.”
Akinruntan and Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa are both from Ilaje Local Government Area, prompting calls for a more equitable distribution of top legislative positions.
Similarly, Ogunmolasuyi shares a local government of origin, Owo, with Deputy Governor Dr. Olayide Adelami, which observers believe influenced his resignation.
While Akinruntan was absent during plenary, Ogunmolasuyi was present but made no public remarks regarding his decision to vacate his leadership position.
Following the resignations, Hon. Ololade Gbegude (Okitipupa Constituency 2) was nominated as the new Deputy Speaker by Hon. Oluwatoyin Japheth (Akoko North-East) and seconded by Hon. Chris Ayebusiwa (Okitipupa Constituency 1). Gbegude was subsequently sworn in.
“I pledge to serve with diligence and commitment. I thank my colleagues for the confidence reposed in me,” Gbegude said after taking the oath of office.
In further reorganisation of House leadership, Hon. Muritala Sulaiman (Akoko South-East) was appointed as Chief Whip, while Hon. Fabiyi Olatunji (Odigbo Constituency 1) emerged as Whip.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji, commended both former principal officers for their maturity and commitment to peace.
“Akinruntan has been a peaceful ally and has supported the House. I appreciate his maturity in ensuring a smooth transition,” Oladiji stated.
“The same goes for Hon. Ogunmolasuyi, who has been a stabilising force in the House and a dependable ally.”
The changes are seen as an effort to preserve political equilibrium within the state ahead of future political developments.
