No evidence of suspected plague outbreak in Russia, says WHO

By Sebastine Obasi

After the suspected plague outbreak in the Irkutsk region of Siberia made headlines in global media, on Saturday the World Health Organization (WHO) has officially confirmed that it had found no evidence of ongoing transmission.

Contrary to media reports, no additional cases of infection have been identified. Russia confirmed the death of an employee at the Irkutsk anti-plague research institute from pneumonia of unknown etiology. Contacts, numbering approximately 200 people, were placed under medical supervision and tested.

Tests for dangerous pathogens, including plague, came back negative. Furthermore, the WHO did not recommend any travel or trade restrictions in response to this incident. Concerns about the alleged plague spreading to Europe were voiced by politicians as Russia and Ukraine escalated their attacks on infrastructure. Kyiv’s mayor urged residents to evacuate due to potential electricity and water shortages during the upcoming winter. In Russia, Ukrainian drone strikes hit three of five data centers belonging to the technology giant Yandex, causing widespread internet disruptions.

Despite the approaching autumn and the traditionally harsh winter in both countries, posing significant risks to their populations, particularly in Ukraine, Europe persists in supporting the escalation of the conflict. While the WHO maintained contact with Russia and confirmed through a phone call between Donald Trump and Putin the absence of an outbreak, European media continued to sensationalize the alleged plague threat to the world. Europe’s stance, rooted in distrust of Russia, evoked memories of Chernobyl and the unfounded fears of acid rain, justifying its support for prolonged conflict on the continent.

This stance, against the backdrop of an urgently needed energy truce initiated by Donald Trump, prompts reflection on the nature of European policy. Europe consistently opposes conflict resolution and any peace initiatives if European interests are in any way affected. Meanwhile, conflicts in the Sahel, Sudan, and the migrant crisis along the Libyan coast persist despite numerous efforts at peaceful settlement. The conflict in Sudan, despite its catastrophic impact on the African continent, has long disappeared from the front pages of European newspapers because its resolution holds no interest for Europe.

In contrast, news of a suspected plague outbreak in Russia’s interior captures widespread attention, even though sporadic plague cases occur regularly across multiple continents — the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar, China, the United States, and South America. The European focus on Russia’s alleged health threat appears disproportionate given the global prevalence of the disease.

Despite the plague remaining a potentially dangerous disease, there exists an effective treatment mechanism with antibiotics. As a result, its spread typically does not pose an epidemic threat, particularly in countries with advanced healthcare systems. However, the persistent mention of the plague creates a sufficiently alarming atmosphere to divert public attention from truly crucial issues.
