In a bold move to address the growing threat of climate change, communities in the Niger Delta region have come together to propose actionable solutions rooted in local knowledge and lived experience.
The initiative, facilitated by Academic Associates PeaceWorks (AAPW) with support from the Embassy of Denmark in Nigeria, aims to empower local communities to take ownership of environmental policies and amplify their voices in climate governance.
According to a press statement signed by Success Nwanedo, Senior Communications Officer at AAPW, the town hall meetings were convened as part of the ongoing project titled “Advancing Community Capacity to Mitigate Climate Change Impact and Develop Green and Blue Economy in the Niger Delta”.
The meetings brought together community stakeholders, traditional institutions, and policymakers to discuss the impact of climate change on their livelihoods and propose solutions to mitigate its effects.
She assured that AAPW will continue to work with community stakeholders, traditional institutions, and policymakers to turn dialogue into action, strengthening local bylaws, building technical capacity, and deepening environmental accountability across the region.
She added that the outcomes from the town hall engagements will inform further advocacy at both the state and federal levels, ensuring that the voices of local communities are heard and their concerns addressed.
The initiative marks a significant step towards building climate resilience in the Niger Delta region. By empowering local communities to take ownership of environmental policies and promoting policy advocacy, AAPW aims to ensure that environmental laws are translated from paper to practice, and that the needs and concerns of the communities are taken into account in climate governance.
Participants at the town hall meetings expressed frustration over the continued pollution of their waterways by oil spills, the health impacts of gas flaring, the destruction of marine life by unregulated trawlers, and the visible absence of environmental sanitation infrastructure.
They called for the establishment of functional waste management systems, improved access to agricultural inputs and credit, enforcement of conservation laws, and the localization of environmental policies to reflect community realities.
