New Era Begins: Ndidi Named Super Eagles Captain After Troost-Ekong’s Retirement

Wilfred Ndidi will lead the Super Eagles at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco following William Troost-Ekong’s retirement from international football.

Troost-Ekong confirmed his exit from the national team on Thursday, bringing an end to his long tenure as captain and creating a natural opening for new leadership. Ndidi, now the most senior player in the squad, has been chosen to wear the armband.

The Beşiktaş midfielder already stepped into the role last month when he captained Nigeria during the 2026 FIFA World Cup African qualifiers in Morocco. He missed the AFCON 2023 tournament in Côte d’Ivoire due to injury but remains one of the team’s most experienced figures.

Ndidi made his Super Eagles debut in August 2015 and has since earned 71 caps. Winger Moses Simon is expected to be named vice-captain as the team begins preparations for next year’s AFCON.

Here are the key reasons why Wilfred Ndidi is a strong and suitable choice to captain the Super Eagles:

  1. Most Senior and Experienced Player

Ndidi is currently the most capped and longest-serving member of the squad, with over 70 international appearances since 2015. That level of continuity provides him with a deep understanding of the team’s culture, expectations, and standards.

  1. Natural Leader on and off the Pitch

Even without the armband, Ndidi has long acted as a leadership figure—calm, disciplined, and respected. Younger players look up to him, while teammates consistently highlight his positive influence in the dressing room.

  1. Tactical Discipline and Consistency

As a defensive midfielder, Ndidi plays a role that demands high intelligence, effective communication, and precise coordination. He sees the entire pitch, organises teammates, and reads the game in a way that aligns with a captain’s responsibilities.

  1. Experience Under Pressure

Having featured in World Cup qualifiers, AFCON tournaments, and top-level European football with Leicester City and now Beşiktaş, Ndidi is accustomed to high-stakes moments. He rarely panics and maintains composure—critical traits for a captain.

  1. Already Proven in the Role

Ndidi led Nigeria during the recent 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Morocco, a stint where he earned praise for his calm leadership and organisational presence. The coaching crew already trusts him in the role.

  1. Professionalism and Clean Reputation

He has never been involved in disciplinary scandals or controversies. His professionalism reflects positively on the team and aligns with what NFF officials expect from a national team captain.

  1. Bridges Generations in the Squad

Ndidi has played with the older generation (Mikel Obi, Victor Moses, Ekong) and is still young enough to connect with the new wave of talents. This makes him the perfect link between past and future.

  1. Motivated After Missing AFCON 2023

Having been sidelined by injury during the last AFCON, Ndidi enters 2025 hungry, focused, and eager to make an impact. That personal drive can inspire the squad.
