The Ministry of Mines and Steel Development (MMSD) has sought the support of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to enhance the enforcement of mining regulations in Jigawa State.

The NSCDC spokesperson in the state, Badruddeen Tijjani, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

According to Tijjani, the Federal Mines Officer in Jigawa, Mr. Mohammed Muntari, made the request during a courtesy visit to the NSCDC state command headquarters in Dutse.

The visit, he said, was aimed at fostering inter-agency collaboration in the fight against illegal mining and the protection of the state’s mineral resources.

During the meeting, Muntari praised the NSCDC leadership and personnel for their continued dedication to securing critical national assets, especially in the mining sector.

He also expressed concern over the increasing activities of illegal miners in the state and emphasised the need for a joint effort in enforcing mining laws and regulations.

In his response, the NSCDC Commandant in the state, Mr. Bala Bodinga, expressed appreciation for the visit and commended the MMSD for its proactive approach. He assured the ministry of the corps’ full cooperation, including the provision of intelligence, patrol support, and enforcement services to safeguard Jigawa’s mineral wealth.

Bodinga reaffirmed the corps’ commitment to its statutory duty of protecting lives, property, and national infrastructure.

He further emphasised the significance of joint surveillance operations, timely information sharing, and regular stakeholder engagements in addressing the menace of illegal mining and promoting compliance with mining regulations.

The commandant also reiterated the NSCDC’s dedication to fostering legal and sustainable mining practices in Jigawa State.
