Manufacturers urge Southeast states to collaborate for economic transformation
Stakeholders in the manufacturing sector have called for greater collaboration among southeastern states to drive investment and foster economic transformation in the region.
This call was made during the 36th Annual General Meeting of the Anambra/Ebonyi/Enugu chapter of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, held on Friday in Enugu.
The event, themed “Revitalising Nigeria’s Economy Through Manufacturing-Driven Non-Oil Export,” emphasised the critical role of the manufacturing sector in economic diversification.
At the event, Lady Ada Chukwudozie, chairperson of MAN for Anambra, Enugu, and Ebonyi, highlighted the urgent need for a paradigm shift in Nigeria’s export strategy.
She warned that manufacturing in the country is nearing extinction and urged stakeholders to address challenges such as funding, high production costs, and an unfriendly investment climate.
Chukwudozie cited Singapore as an example of a country that achieved economic growth by focusing on innovation and manufacturing-driven non-oil exports.
“We must prioritise investment in infrastructure, education, and research to develop a skilled and innovative workforce. Policies like tax incentives, trade agreements, and access to finance are essential to support manufacturing and ensure competitiveness in global markets,” she stated.
Dr. Dakuku Peterside, former Director-General of the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, in his keynote address, underscored the potential of export-driven manufacturing to drive economic growth, reduce dependency on oil, and create job opportunities.
“For manufacturers to thrive, we need robust infrastructure—railways, seaports, and road networks—along with stable monetary policies, competitive power supply, and export incentives,” he said.
Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, called for stronger collaboration among southeastern states to address regional challenges and leverage comparative advantages.
“Southeast states must learn from one another, share ideas, and invest in manufacturing. In Anambra, we are pioneering agricultural reforms, particularly in palm and coconut farming, to diversify our economy,” he noted.
Chief Martin Agbaso, chairman of the event, lamented past policies like the Structural Adjustment Program, which discouraged exports and favoured imports. He urged local governments to harness their natural resources to promote development and reduce economic vulnerabilities.
The event also featured awards to distinguished Nigerians, a gala night, and entertainment.
