LASTMA Warns Unions Against Using Stickers As Vehicle Registration

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a warning to transport unions across the state, condemning the growing practice of using union stickers as substitutes for official vehicle registration numbers.

In a statement on Sunday, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the trend as not only unlawful but also a serious threat to public safety and state security.

According to Bakare-Oki, some commercial drivers have taken to displaying union or association stickers in place of valid number plates—an act he said violates existing traffic and security regulations.

He stressed that only constitutionally recognised government agencies are authorised to issue and regulate vehicle registrations in Lagos State. The proliferation of unauthorised stickers, he warned, compromises the ability of law enforcement agencies to track vehicles and enforce traffic rules effectively.

In response to the issue, LASTMA announced plans to collaborate with security agencies and other enforcement bodies to increase surveillance across key traffic corridors.

Vehicles found with unauthorised stickers instead of proper registration plates will be immediately impounded, and their owners will face legal sanctions.

“Any vehicle discovered navigating the roadways under the guise of ‘Union Sticker’ identifiers or other unauthorised symbols shall be summarily impounded, and the culpable parties shall face full sanctions under the provisions of the law,” Bakare-Oki warned, according to the statement issued by LASTMA’s spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq.

He further urged transport unions to comply strictly with the state’s registration laws, emphasising that proper documentation is not just a matter of regulatory compliance but a critical element of public safety.

LASTMA also called on all stakeholders in the transport sector to cooperate with ongoing efforts to sanitise road operations across Lagos.

The agency reiterated its commitment to upholding traffic discipline, ensuring safer roads, and maintaining public order.
