Iran accuses US of ceasefire breach as Strait of Hormuz tensions escalate

Iran has accused the United States of violating a fragile ceasefire agreement, even as Donald Trump maintains that the truce remains intact amid rising tensions across the Middle East.

Fresh explosions were reported across key Gulf states, while conflicting claims emerged over the status of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, with Tehran declaring it shut despite US assurances it remains open.

Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, said Washington had breached multiple aspects of the disputed ceasefire deal.

He cited Israel’s strikes on Lebanon, alleged drone incursions into Iranian airspace, and the White House’s stance on uranium enrichment as violations.

‘Now, the very “workable basis on which to negotiate” has been openly and clearly violated, even before the negotiations began,’ Ghalibaf posted on X, quoting Trump. ‘In such situation, a bilateral ceasefire or negotiations is unreasonable.’

The White House rejected Iran’s claims, with press secretary Karoline Leavitt insisting the US had not agreed to any terms allowing Tehran to continue enriching uranium.

‘The President’s red lines, namely, the end of Iranian enrichment in Iran have not changed, and the idea that President Trump would ever accept an Iranian wish list as a deal is completely absurd,’ Leavitt said.

She also dismissed reports that the Strait of Hormuz had been closed, despite Iranian state media suggesting otherwise following Israeli strikes in Lebanon.

‘We have seen an uptick of traffic in the strait today,’ Leavitt said, adding that public statements from Iran may differ from private actions.

Confusion persisted as Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported that two tankers passed through the strait early Wednesday before later claiming passage had been suspended. Tehran also warned that vessels attempting to transit without permission could face attacks and heavy tolls.

Meanwhile, regional tensions escalated further. Saudi Arabia’s East-West oil pipeline reportedly came under drone attack, while Kuwait said it intercepted 28 drones targeting critical infrastructure, including oil facilities and power plants.

Explosions were also reported in Tehran, though US officials declined immediate comment.

Addressing the situation in Lebanon, Leavitt made clear it was not covered under the ceasefire agreement.

‘Lebanon is not part of the cease fire,’ she said. ‘That has been related to all parties involved in the ceasefire.’

The conflicting narratives and ongoing attacks have cast doubt over the durability of the ceasefire, raising fears of a broader regional escalation.
