The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun State, Dr Mutiu Agboke has assured that there would be improvement in logistic, coordination and transparency towards the governorship election in 2026.
Dr Agboke also appealed to members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Osun State, to make their vehicles available for routine inspection.
This assurance was made by Dr Agboke during a town hall meeting held at NURTW State Secretariat ahead of the 2026 Osun polls.
The meeting which was held as part of early preparations for the upcoming Osun State Governorship Election, between INEC and the leadership of the NURTW on Monday in Osogbo, brought together key electoral stakeholders from across the state
The Osun INEC boss also called on the union to ensure their members strictly followed all INEC protocols, especially regarding movement of men and materials during the election period.
He said, “There are 19 political parties participating in this election. Every one of them is a stakeholder, and we expect the NURTW to operate fairly across board. The neutrality and support of your union are vital to the credibility of this election.
“I appeal to the union to make their vehicles available for routine inspection and ensure their drivers strictly follow all INEC protocols, especially regarding movement of men and materials during the two-days election period.
“The 2026 election would reflect improved coordination and transparency.”
The REC thanked all participants and emphasised the importance of early collaboration, noting that INEC was unable to hold such engagements during the last state election in 2023 due to leadership uncertainties.
On the issue of drivers being unable to vote due to their engagement in the election, the REC disclosed that INEC has proposed a bill to the National Assembly to allow electoral workers to vote wherever they are posted the two critical days; Friday and Saturday of the election weekend
“However, the bill is yet to be signed into law, meaning those working with INEC may still be unable to vote in the upcoming election,” he explained. Addressing complaints against some INEC staff toward drivers, the REC promised the creation of a toll-free number to report any misconduct.
The Osun INEC boss affirmed that the Commission would ensure prompt compensation for NURTW members and that any fraudulent activity within the system would not be tolerated.
He reiterated the need for drivers to remain at their assigned posts throughout the election period and advised them to work closely with Electoral Officers (EOs) and Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPOs) to ensure smooth operations.
He encouraged the union to educate its members about the electoral process, especially the Continuous Voter Registration CVR which is to commence on the August 18 for online registration, as well as August 25, 2025, for physical registration, so they can contribute meaningfully and responsibly to the success of elections in the state.
He revealed that technological innovations like vehicle tracking systems would be used to prevent diversion of electoral materials.
Responding, the NURTW Chairman represented Wakeem Nurudeen Alowonle, represented by the Secretary, Sunday Niyi Oludare, urged INEC to formally write the union stating the number of vehicles required and the allowances to be provided.
He also requested for better treatment for drivers and encouraged INEC to train its officials on courtesy and cooperation. The NURTW chairman, assured the Commission of its full support adding that, “We are committed to working with INEC to ensure peaceful and successful elections across Osun State.”
