Domestic petrol supply falls 20.6%, imports rise in July

Average daily petrol supply from domestic refineries fell by 20.6 per cent to 25.8 million litres in July 2026, from 32.5 million litres per day recorded in June, data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has shown.

The latest figures obtained from the Authority’s monthly oil and gas data also showed that the decline in domestic supply was partly offset by an increase in imported petrol, which rose to 19.7 million litres per day in July from 18.1 million litres per day in June.

Combined domestic and imported petrol supply consequently stood at an average of 45.5 million litres per day in July, down 10.1 per cent from the 50.6 million litres supplied daily in June.

The July figures marked the second consecutive monthly decline in total petrol supply, after combined supply rose from 47.4 million litres per day in May to 50.6 million litres in June.

The NMDPRA data showed considerable fluctuations in domestic petrol supply during the first seven months of the year.
Domestic supply stood at 40.1 million litres per day in January before falling sharply by 26.7 per cent to 29.4 million litres in February.

Supply recovered to 34.2 million litres per day in March, representing a 16.3 per cent increase from February, and rose further to 40.7 million litres in April, up 19 per cent month-on-month.

The upward trend continued in May when domestic petrol supply reached a seven-month high of 41.5 million litres per day, an increase of 2 per cent over April.

However, supply declined by 21.7 per cent to 32.5 million litres per day in June before falling by another 20.6 per cent to 25.8 million litres in July.

The July figure was the lowest domestic petrol supply recorded in the seven-month period and was 37.1 per cent below the January level.

Meanwhile, imported petrol supply followed a different trajectory. The country received an average of 24.8 million litres of imported petrol daily in January, the highest monthly volume recorded during the period under review.

Imports plunged by 87.9 per cent to just three million litres per day in February. They subsequently increased to 5.9 million litres in March, representing a 96.7 per cent month-on-month rise.

Imports declined again to 3.7 million litres per day in April, before rising by 59.5 per cent to 5.9 million litres in May.

A significant increase was recorded in June, when imported petrol supply more than tripled to 18.1 million litres per day, representing a 206.8 per cent increase over May.

The upward trend continued in July, although at a much slower pace, with imports rising 8.8 per cent to 19.7 million litres per day.

Despite the increase, July imports remained 20.6 per cent below the 24.8 million litres per day recorded in January.

Monthly supply picture

In January, total petrol supply averaged 64.9 million litres per day, comprising 40.1 million litres of domestic supply and 24.8 million litres of imports.

February recorded the lowest combined supply in the seven-month period at 32.4 million litres per day, as domestic supply fell to 29.4 million litres while imports dropped to three million litres.

Combined supply recovered to 40.1 million litres in March and 44.4 million litres in April before reaching 47.4 million litres in May.

The June increase to 50.6 million litres per day was driven largely by the sharp rise in imports, which climbed to 18.1 million litres, even as domestic supply fell to 32.5 million litres.

In July, total supply declined to 45.5 million litres per day. Domestic refineries accounted for 25.8 million litres, or about 56.7 per cent of total supply, while imports accounted for 19.7 million litres, or 43.3 per cent.
