How Female Driver Veered Off Otedola Bridge—LASTMA
A female motorist is currently receiving treatment for critical injuries after her Toyota Camry sedan veered off the upper deck of the Otedola Bridge and plunged to the lower section of the roadway in a frightening accident that occurred on Monday.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the incident involved a Toyota Camry.
Preliminary investigations suggest the accident was caused by excessive speed and a sudden braking manoeuvre.
In a statement issued by LASTMA’s spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, the motorist was reportedly driving at high speed when she noticed another vehicle swerving into the service lane ahead.
She abruptly applied her brakes in response, which caused her car to lose stability and swerve off the bridge.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the female motorist, while travelling at an excessive speed, abruptly applied her brakes upon perceiving another vehicle manoeuvring into the service lane ahead of her. This sudden deceleration destabilised her vehicle, causing it to veer uncontrollably and ultimately plummet off the bridge, leaving her critically injured,” Adebayo said.
Emergency response teams, including officials from LASTMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LSNSC), and the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), arrived at the scene promptly.
The driver was rescued from the wreckage and swiftly transported to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre at the Toll Gate for urgent medical attention.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed concern over the growing rate of accidents linked to reckless driving.
He stressed the importance of adhering to speed limits and complying with all traffic regulations to ensure the safety of road users.
“This unfortunate occurrence could have been entirely circumvented had the driver complied with the statutory speed regulations. We therefore implore all road users to exercise greater caution and to uphold the tenets of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018 in the collective interest of public safety,” Bakare-Oki stated.
While extending wishes for the motorist’s quick recovery, Bakare-Oki reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to road safety and orderliness across Lagos State.
