Group Seeks Probe Into Land Grabbing Allegations Against Wike In FCT

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has strongly condemned the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, over the ongoing demolition of structures in Abuja.
The group described his actions as high-handed, warning that he is a “mere servant of the Nigerian people, whose collective sovereignty forms the basis of legitimacy for all elected and appointed officials.”
The group stated this on Friday in a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, after Wike slammed the Senate for passing a resolution ordering him to halt all demolition in the FCT.
The Senate had said the minister must halt demolition and allow its committee investigation and report back to it before any action is taken.
But in a swift reaction, Wike vowed to continue demolition in the FCT saying he won’t be blackmailed into stopping what to him was necessary to correct years of illegality in the capital territory.
HURIWA however reminded Wike that government officials are obligated to serve the people and act in accordance with their collective will.
The association warned the minister against what it said is a pretentious display of absolute power, asserting that such authority is transient and unrealistic.
HURIWA called on Wike to remember that his position as FCT Minister does not place him above the law.
The group stressed that no matter his achievements or influence, he remains accountable to the people of Nigeria.
The rights group stated: “Wike’s alleged arrogance of power is unbecoming of a public servant. No matter who he thinks he is, he remains a mere servant of the people of Nigeria, who are the rightful owners of the sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. His transient position must not blind him to this reality.”
The association expressed dismay at Wike’s vow to continue the demolition of structures allegedly built illegally on government lands, despite widespread criticism and the Senate’s directive to halt the demolitions. It accused the minister of disregarding due process and the rule of law, which are fundamental principles in a democratic society.
HURIWA further reminded Wike that in a democracy, the voice of the people is paramount. It urged him to heed the growing public outcry against his actions, which have reportedly rendered many residents of Abuja homeless. The association asserted:
“The voices of the people are the voice of God. Wike must listen to the cries of Nigerians whose lives have been upended by these demolitions. Governance is about service to the people, not the display of unchecked power. We demand that he immediately align his actions with the collective will of the people.”
HURIWA called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the ultimate authority in the Federal Capital Territory, to step in and address the allegations against Wike. The association urged the president to prioritize the welfare of FCT residents and ensure that no appointee undermines the principles of justice and fairness.
“President Tinubu, by virtue of the constitution, is the governor of the FCT and must act to protect the rights and interests of its residents. The allegations of land grabbing and misuse of power against Wike are too serious to ignore.
“We demand an independent commission of inquiry to investigate these claims thoroughly,” HURIWA said.
HURIWA also highlighted the growing accusations that Wike has been reallocating revoked lands to cronies and associates, including prominent political figures. It noted that such allegations tarnish the credibility of his administration and erode public trust in government institutions.
“The allegations of land grabbing against Wike cannot be swept under the rug. President Tinubu must establish an independent panel to investigate these claims.
“The findings must be made public, and anyone found culpable must face the full wrath of the law.
“Wike must understand that he is not above the law and is certainly not a sacred cow,” the group stated.
The association also expressed solidarity with Senator Ireti Kingibe, who was reportedly prevented from presenting a motion on the Senate floor regarding the FCT demolitions.
HURIWA condemned the alleged harassment and urged the Senate to protect lawmakers’ rights to represent their constituents without intimidation.
HURIWA emphasized that democracy thrives on accountability and respect for the rule of law. It urged Wike to adopt a more consultative and people-centered approach in managing the affairs of the FCT.
The group warned that failure to heed the public’s concerns could lead to further discontent and undermine the government’s legitimacy.
“Wike must remember that public office is a privilege, not a right. His actions must reflect the principles of democracy and justice. We will not tolerate any form of impunity or abuse of power. Nigerians deserve better,” HURIWA concluded.
