CDS Commends Military For Proactive Operations, Seeks Ethical Conduct
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has commended officers of the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army and troops operating under Operation FASAN YAMMA for their exceptional performance in addressing security challenges. He urged them to maintain their vigilance and deepen cooperation with civilian communities.
General Musa made the commendation during a strategic Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) visit to the 8 Division Nigerian Army, Giginya Barracks, in Sokoto.
Represented by Rear Admiral Olusanya Abiodun Bankole, the CDS commended the troops’ professionalism, sacrifice, and proactive efforts in tackling insecurity in the Operation FASAN YAMMA theatre and other conflict zones across the country.

The visit served not only to commend the troops but also to emphasize the evolving nature of modern conflict and the vital role of civil-military cooperation. “The threats we face are dynamic. The nature of modern conflict demands a holistic approach that integrates military operations with civil engagement,” he added.
He emphasized that victory on the battlefield must go hand-in-hand with earning the trust and confidence of the civilian population. “Military success is not just measured by battlefield victories but by the support and trust of the people we protect. This is at the heart of the Chief of Defence Staff’s people-centric command philosophy.”
He urged troops to prioritize civilian safety in all operations, uphold discipline, and strictly adhere to the rules of engagement and international humanitarian law.
“As part of your rules of engagement, I urge all personnel to uphold the principles of human rights and ethical conduct. Misconduct, excessive force, or disregard for the rule of law undermines the credibility and legitimacy of our mission,” he said.
The CDS further highlighted that acts of compassion and professionalism not only support military objectives but also shape public perception of the Armed Forces.
“Every officer, soldier, rating, and airman must serve as an ambassador of peace and stability by treating civilians as allies and protecting their rights and dignity,” he said. “Our engagement with communities must reflect respect, integrity, and duty.”
Underscoring the importance of civil-military relations, General Musa noted that the military must continue partnering with civil authorities, local organizations, and communities through humanitarian support, quick-impact projects, and infrastructure development. “That’s why the military provides water, healthcare, and education in host communities,” he added.
He charged commanders at all levels to promote environments that encourage teamwork, accountability, and transparent communication, ensuring that the conduct of personnel continues to reflect positively on the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
“Let the people see you and run to you—not away from you. Our greatest source of intelligence is the population we serve. Let us ensure our engagements with civil entities are characterized by mutual respect and cooperation. This is key to achieving our strategic objectives.”
In his remarks, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division, Major General Ibekunle Ajose, noted that the CDS’s leadership philosophy reinforces the understanding that success in asymmetric warfare requires not only tactical victories but also winning the hearts and minds of the populace.
He disclosed that the CDS’s visit featured a sensitization lecture on human rights, gender-based violence, and military ethics, an initiative aimed at deepening professionalism and discipline within the ranks.
Ajose reaffirmed the moral responsibility of the troops: “As protectors of the vulnerable, we must embody empathy, discipline, and justice. Today’s engagement strengthens our collective resolve.”
