APC Plateau primaries: Members anxious as several aspirants withdraw

By Golok Nanmwa

Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State are on edge as they await the commencement of the direct primary election for the House of Representatives seats.

Since early Saturday, momentum has been building in Jos, the state capital, with various groups and caucuses holding a series of meetings.

At the party secretariat, anxious members were seen waiting eagerly for the commencement of balloting, while in several wards, party faithful remained on standby for the arrival of election materials and guidelines.

A party source in Kanam Local Government Area confirmed that while voting is yet to begin, members are fully mobilised and ready to cast their ballots.

According to the party’s timetable, Saturday’s exercise is expected to produce candidates for the Federal House of Representatives.

Most members and supporters contacted by Vanguard said they were not aware of any consensus arrangement and were fully prepared for direct primaries.

Meanwhile, a fresh wave of withdrawals is set to sweep through the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State as several aspirants signal their intention to step down ahead of the National Assembly primaries.

Reliable party sources told Vanguard that many aspirants across various federal constituencies are currently engaged in wide consultations and are expected to formally pull out of the race in the coming hours or days.

The strategic withdrawals are aimed at fostering unity, reducing pre-primary tensions, and positioning the party strongly for the 2027 general elections.
In a notable development on Friday, Hon. Barr. John Kyohroh Christopher formally announced his withdrawal from the contest for the Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency.

In a statement issued to newsmen the aspirant said the decision was reached after wide consultations with critical stakeholders, party leaders, and supporters.

“I, Hon. Barr. John Kyohroh Christopher, hereby formally announce my withdrawal from the contest for the Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency seat in the forthcoming All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives primaries,” the statement read.

“After wide consultations, I have decided at this time in the overall interest of unity, peaceful co-existence, and progress of our great party and the good people of Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency to withdraw from the race.”

Hon. Christopher expressed deep appreciation to Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, for his unwavering support, mentorship, and fatherly guidance. He also thanked APC leaders and members at all levels for the trust reposed in him, and commended the people of Jos North and Bassa, particularly the Anaguta Nation, for their overwhelming support.

He pledged to continue working for the unity of the party and the overall progress of the constituency.
