The People’s Republic of China should officially acknowledge the assistance of the United States of America during World War II, President Donald Trump demanded Tuesday night.
Trump expects President Xi Jinping to, during the 80th commemoration, mention the “massive amount of support and blood” that the U.S. gave to China to help it “secure its freedom from a very unfriendly foreign invader.”
The president said he looks forward to the honouring and remembrance of many Americans who paid the supreme price through “bravery and sacrifice” for China’s quest for victory.
“May President Xi and the wonderful people of China have a great and lasting day of celebration,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
Within days in 1945, the U.S. Air Force dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki as America backed China. Japan surrendered on September 2, 1945, and in 2014, the Chinese government declared September 3 as Victory Day.
The military parade on Wednesday at the Tiananmen Square will feature dozens of troop contingents and the display of advanced equipment such as drones, hypersonic missiles, and fighter jets.
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s Kim Jong Un arrived in Beijing on Tuesday, his first visit after six years, joining Russian President Vladimir Putin and more than 20 other foreign leaders.
The Victory Day event is the climax of the high-level gathering in China following the meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), an Eurasian political, economic, and international security organization.
Established by China in 2001, the founding members include Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. India and Pakistan joined in June 2017, Iran in July 2023, and Belarus in July 2024.
The SCO countries’ leaders are in Beijing alongside the Heads of States and officials of Cuba, Cambodia, Congo, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Maldives, Iran, Serbia, Slovakia, Myanmar, Turkmenistan, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe.
