Abia State Government Reaffirms Commitment To Workers’ Welfare

The Abia State Government has reiterated its strong commitment to the welfare of workers and the building of a truly inclusive society where every citizen, especially workers, is recognised as a vital partner in governance and development.

Speaking to journalists in Umuahia, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Labour Relations, Sir Godson Anucha, stated that Governor Alex Otti’s administration has made the well-being of workers a central part of its policies and actions since assuming office in 2023.

According to Sir Anucha, Governor Otti’s approach to governance is people-focused and driven by the belief that government should serve the collective good, not a select few.

“This government’s projects are not designed for one group or class; they are for all Abians. Workers are not left out. In fact, they are at the centre of it all.”

He pointed out that one of the biggest achievements of the government is normalising the payment of workers’ salaries and that of pensioners. stressing that public servants in Abia State now receive their salaries on or before the 28th of every month, bringing an end to the era of uncertainty and delays that many workers experienced in the past.

“The days when workers would go months without salaries are over. Under Governor Otti, salaries come as and when due.”

He also revealed that the government has cleared 24 months of outstanding pension arrears owed to retirees by previous administrations and has restored dignity and hope to thousands of retired public servants across the state.

“In just two years, the government has paid off two full years of pension arrears. That’s something many people didn’t expect could happen so soon. It shows that promises are being kept.”

Sir Anucha also noted that in addition to prompt payments, the state government has also improved its relationship with labour unions and workers in general, emphasising that the current administration practises open and democratic engagement, where workers and their representatives are free to voice concerns and contribute to policy decisions.

He also stated that the Otti-led administration is working to improve infrastructure, education, and public service delivery, which directly impact the quality of life for workers and their families.

“Parents no longer pay school fees for their children in public schools. This is real economic relief, especially for low- and middle-income families. It’s part of a bigger plan to invest in people.”

As the Otti administration approaches the second half of its first term, Sir Anucha assured that more reforms and worker-friendly initiatives are on the way, and that the government remains committed to improving working conditions, building capacity, and ensuring that workers have a strong voice in shaping the future of Abia State.

“Governor Otti believes that when you empower workers, you build a stronger society. And that is exactly what we are doing.”
