Amid growing political speculations in Abia State, the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers has dismissed claims that the state government is attempting to stifle traditional rulers through a proposed code of conduct.
The clarification came in response to a recent allegation made by a member of the opposition party, who accused the state government of planning to cage monarchs or discipline them over a visit to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Chairman of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Linus Mbah, debunked the claim, describing it as a politically motivated attempt to mislead the public.
“Let it be known by all and sundry that there is no truth in the information shared on the social media platforms by the said Aguoru. Also, that there is no plan or move whatsoever to cage or gag the traditional institution in Abia State,” Mbah said.
He clarified that while a code of conduct is indeed in the works, it is still at the draughting stage and not intended to suppress the activities or authority of monarchs.
“There is rather a code of conduct which is necessary to maintain the integrity of the most revered traditional rulers in Abia State. This code of conduct is being drafted currently and is yet to be considered or approved for implementation,” he added.
Eze Mbah also addressed rumours of punitive actions against traditional rulers, stating, “There is also no summons whatsoever or threat to sanction or suspend any traditional ruler by the State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.”
According to him, the current administration has shown more regard for the traditional institution by providing financial support that was previously unavailable.
“Monarchs are now receiving a monthly stipend of N250,000 and other packages, unlike what obtained in the past,” he said.
He cautioned politicians against drawing traditional institutions into political conflicts, particularly in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections, while also reaffirming the independence and dignity of traditional rulers in the face of growing political manoeuvrings.
