Abia Begins Payment Of Salary Arrears To Judiciary Workers
The Abia State Government has commenced the payment of judiciary workers’ arrears as part of the agreement reached with the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN).
Recall that last Thursday, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed which led to the suspension of JUSUN’s industrial action.
Speaking to Journalists during a press briefing on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, assured the public of the administration’s commitment to honoring the terms of the MOU emphasizing that the Otti administration is “irrevocably committed to honouring all the terms of the MOU.”
Prince Kanu explained that the delay in payments was due to paperwork involved in processing the large sums, but confirmed that the necessary processes were being finalized. He expressed optimism that judicial staff would receive alerts in their accounts before the end of the day.
“You are all aware that just last Thursday, the State Government reached an agreement with JUSUN during which both parties signed an MOU. The State Government I must inform you is irrevocably committed to honouring all the terms of the MOU.
Those whose mandate it is to effect all the payments agreed upon are working round the clock to do so. I want to reassure JUSUN and members of the public that His Excellency Dr Alex Otti is a man of his words and the same goes for his appointees,” Prince Kanu stated.
The Commissioner further highlighted ongoing reforms in the judiciary, including the construction of court buildings across the 17 local government areas, regular salary payments, and the digitization of the judicial system to enhance justice delivery.
Supporting the Commissioner’s remarks, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ikechukwu Uwanna, revealed that payments for November 2024 had already been effected and that the remainder of the arrears would be paid shortly.
“Members of the Judiciary received payment for November 2024. They will receive the rest of the number today,” Uwanna confirmed.
He also noted that concerns raised by the union regarding the New Minimum Wage had been addressed, stating, “The agreement we had with JUSUN is that they will resume immediately they receive their payment. I believe that by tomorrow, the Judiciary will resume operations.”
